Future of BCR:
We are excited to announce that we are in the process of transitioning from a hurricane relief supply distribution center to a community center, which will be called the Southern Appalachia Community Center. We will continue to have free "consumable" supplies such as food, paper products, hygiene items, first aid, and baby diapers/food/formula as long as those supplies are still coming in. We plan to continue the food pantry indefinitely. However, the long-term plan is to provide more services and less stuff. Plans are in the works for wellness services, mental health, music/art space, event space for community gatherings and fundraisers, and summer tutoring for local students.
Project Update:
We have started working on the community gardens! We had a great group of Young Life high schoolers helping us out for a weekend. They built several raised beds and got started filling them. We definitely need more garden soil and will need vegetable starts soon! If you can help, please let us know. The vegetables we grow will go towards our free food pantry.
Staff Update:
Our founder Krysten has resigned due to health reasons. We miss her terribly but understand. Lori has stepped into the role of president with Travis taking over as vice president. We are extremely excited to announce that Katie Houser is now our executive director! Katie has been with us since just a few days after we started BCR. If you've been coming to BCR at all, you already know her from "Kamping World" and sign-in. She has lived in Western North Carolina almost 30 years, has many years of management experience, and is fully dedicated to helping our community.
Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who are still helping out multiple days a week and to everyone who has donated to us! We couldn't do any of this without you!!!
I love coming up from Georgia to serve weekly with these incredible people!!! They have become like family to me! I’ve also met so many other wonderful people each week! Burnsville is like a second home to me now and holds a very special place in my heart! The Lord has truly blessed me!!!
How exciting!!! Congrats to all 3 wonderful people, Lori, Travis and Katie. I am sorry to hear about Krysten., as she did am amazing job getting BCR started. I look forward to returning one day!
